There are two types of rights that you must take into account:

  • synchronisation rights
  • performing rights

Synchronisation rights

Do you want to use music in an (online) radio or TV programme, commercial or podcast? If so, you should always ask the music publishers and the record company for permission to use this music beforehand.

This permission is called the synchronisation right. The publisher and record company decide whether you may use the work and in return for what fee.

More information about synchronisation rights? Click here.

Performing rights

Have you received this permission? Then apply for your licence for the public use of these musical works via MyUnisono.

Radio

If you have a private radio station, Sabam offers you (under the brand name Unisono) a licence with which you as a broadcaster can make free use of our repertoire. In return for this licence, you have to pay copyright royalties and deliver the playlists to Unisono. We would like to stress that this only concerns a copyright authorisation. In addition, the Fair Remuneration is due to PlayRight and SIMIM.

The amount you have to pay depends on your potential audience and your income. In concrete terms you pay a percentage of your turnover coupled with a minimum fee.

For stations with a small potential audience and low turnover, we only charge a lump sum based on the weekly broadcasting schedule. For the more commercial radio stations, the calculation is based on their income.

We charge 2.8% on the first income bracket and apply a collection rate of 1.5% to income exceeding a certain threshold. Both the threshold and the minimum royalty are determined per broadcasting programme and are indexed annually.

This rate applies to local, regional and national radios.

Simulcast

If the programme can be listened to simultaneously online, then the broadcaster pays a fixed amount for this.

Web radio

The fee for web radio stations is determined on the basis of the income and the maximum number of simultaneous streams.

As with private radio stations, the royalty consists of a percentage on the income coupled with a minimum fee. In the case of web radios, this is 2.8% on all income generated.

Podcast

Looking to offer, host or distribute a podcast on your platforms? If the podcast includes pre-existing or specially composed music, Sabam provides you, under the Unisono brand, with a licence for the authors’ rights, allowing you to use this music at the following rate:

Please apply for your licence using this form. This ensures that the authors and composers of the music are fairly compensated.

Once your invoice is paid, you can offer the podcast(s) online.

Note: If the podcast(s) also feature texts, book excerpts, poetry, documentaries, or sketches, you’ll need a licence for those as well. Find out more.
